Let’s get into WrestleMania 25…

Date – April 5th, 2009

Location – Reliant Stadium, Houston, Texas

Attendance – 72,744

  • Unified Tag-Team Championships – Primo and Epico (C) defeat The Miz and John Morrison (C)

Headline – The WWE Tag-Team Champions (Primo and Epico) would battle the World Tag-Team Champions (Miz and Morrison) to unify both sets of titles. Surprisingly, this match was on the pre-show and not the usual filler-time battle royal. Primo and Epico would become the unified tag champions.

Rating – 2 out of 5

  • Money in The Bank Ladder Match – CM Punk defeats Christian, Kofi Kingston, MVP, Shelton Benjamin, Finlay, Kane and Mark Henry

Headline – After a bit of a down Money in The Bank match, the previous year, it would go back to being one of the best matches on the card and would end with CM Punk winning his 2nd consecutive Money in The Bank match.

Rating – 3.8 out of 5

  • “Miss WrestleMania” Battle Royal – Santino Marella defeats Alicia Fox, Beth Phoenix, Brie Bella, Nikki Bella, Eve Torres, Gail Kim, Miss Jackie, Jillian Hall, Joy Giovanni, Katie Lea Burchill, Kelly Kelly, Layla, Maria Kanellis, Maryse, Melina, Michelle McCool, Mickie James, Molly Holly, Natalya, Rosa Mendes, Sunny, Tiffany, Torrie Wilson and Victoria

Headline – I can’t put into words how ridiculous this match was…a man won a women’s battle royal. That’s it.

Rating – 0.5 out of 5

  • 3-on-1 Handicap Match – Chris Jericho defeats Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka and Ricky Steamboat (with Ric Flair)

Headline – The main takeaway from this match was after Jericho won, Mickey Rourke was sitting ringside, got into the ring and knocked Jericho out and then celebrated with the legends.

Rating – 2 out of 5

  • Extreme Rules Match – Matt Hardy defeats Jeff Hardy

Headline – The 2 brothers turned rivals had a very good match in a match they are very comfortable in, one with no rules. The newly minted heel and older brother, Matt would pickup the victory over his younger brother, Jeff.

Rating – 3 out of 5

  • Intercontinental Championship – Rey Mysterio defeats JBL (C)

Headline – Before the match, JBL attacked Mysterio but as soon as the bell rang, Mysterio surpsied JBL with his finishing “619” move and would get the 3-count to become the new champion.

Rating – 1 out of 5

  • Singles Match – The Undertaker defeats Shawn Michaels

Headline – The best Undertaker match of all-time. It’s between this match and the rematch at next year’s WrestleMania, but because it’s the first one, it’s the best one. This match had everything you’d ever want with some of the best storytelling in WWE history mixed in. Michaels lit up Taker with several sweet chin music kicks anjd Taker hit Michaels with a few tombstone pile-drivers but none were enough to keep the other down for a 3-count until Taker drilled Michaels with one final tombstone pile-driver and would get the 3-count and extend his WrestleMania undefeated streak to 17-0.

Rating – 5 out of 5

  • Triple Threat Match, World Heavyweight Championship – John Cena defeats Big Show and Edge (C) (with Vickie Guerrero)

Headline – This match often gets a bad wrap and it’s not really warranted. It’s impossible to follow what Undertaker and Shawn Michaels just did. There was an awesome spot where John Cena hit his Attitude Adjustment finishing move on both Edge and Big show at the same time and would end up winning the match to become the new champion.

Rating – 3 out of 5

  • WWE Championship – Triple H (C) defeats Randy Orton

Headline – This was a decent match but certainly not the best, not totally sure why this was the main event and not Cena vs Edge vs Big Show but it is what it is. Triple H would win after he punted Orton in the head, hit him with a sledgehammer and then hit Orton with his finishing pedigree move to retain his title.

Rating – 2.5 out of 5

WrestleMania 25 Rating – 3.2 out of 5

Summary – WWE’s 25th anniversary of WrestleMania was an overall solid show and certainly better than last year’s debacle. The obvious bright spots in this show was Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels, John Cena vs Edge vs Big show, Matt Hardy vs Jeff Hardy and the Money in The Bank match.
