Next to Happy Gilmore, John Daly may be the greatest thing to ever happen to the game of golf. Sure, there are icons like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and even Tiger Woods, but nobody exudes personality quite like John Daly. Watching Daly on the course is always a spectacle, from his brash behavior to his flashy wardrobe. The best thing about him from a fan’s perspective, is that there is never a shortage of ridiculous stories about the guy.
In the video below, you can listen to Daly talk about his crippling gambling addiction from years past, along with the time he won $55,000 from a casino and proceeded to throw the winnings over a bridge.
“I won like $55,000 in the casino, and I said to my fourth wife Sherrie, if you’re going to yell and scream at me about this, I threw it over the bridge going over to Memphis from Arkansas,” Daly said. “I threw all the money out the [car] window and said, ‘You know what, if you want that money, you can go find it. But let me tell you something, you don’t have a job. You’re not working. I’m supporting you, I’m paying all the bills.’
“My buddy [then] took her to a McDonald’s drive-thru and got her two cheeseburgers and some french fries and a soda, and [it was like], ‘OK, this is how you can live from now on if that’s the way you want it.'”
