US Soccer Set to Battle Against Mexico Shorthanded

Written by Durr

USA vs. Mexico for real. Who cares about the Nations League Victory or the Gold Cup victory. The real battle starts tonight at 9pm eastern.

The US will be short handed as both Gio Reyna and Sergino Dest will not be on the roster for the next two games. You also have Christian Pulisic, who is coming off injury, expected to come off the bench in both games potentially due to his fitness.

This is a huge hit for the United States, as arguably their two best playmakers and best defender are either out or limited for this huge section of qualifying.

The way it stands currently:

In case you didn’t know, the top 3 qualify for the World Cup while the 4th place team participates in an intercontinental playoff, something the United States should try to avoid obviously.

The United States will need to pull off a draw at the least tonight considering it is a home match for them. A win would put them back in a great situation to qualify.

Mexico is extremely hungry for victory considering the results of the last two times the teams faced off. However, El Tri knows that World Cup Qualifying is the Main Event. They can erase those last two losses to the United States with a convincing win on the road.

United States Coach, Greg Berhalter, has already announced that Zach Steffen will be the Goalkeeper against Mexico. There is some controversy with the decision due to New England Revolution Keeper, Matt Turner, playing more as of late for his club and his recent success on the national team. Steffen just signed an extension with his English Premier League Club, Manchester City, so he is on an all-time high. However, he will likely be the backup there…that’s why there’s controversy. Steffen is on the significantly better team, but does not play.

I am nervous. I have a bad feeling. But realistically I see a draw coming out of this

Prediction: 1-1

And yes, I will take that any day against Mexico. Let’s go USA!
