“Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson will go down in MMA history as one of the greatest fight to never happen. The match-up was scheduled on multiple occasions, but fell away to varying circumstances each and every time,” as Bloody Elbow stated.
Khabib addressed El Cucuy’s future in the UFC at his Gorilla Energy press conference where he signed a contract for $7 million.
“He’s 38 years old. Tell me how he can make a comeback? He was dominated in his last three bouts. Different styles – a striker, a grappler; Dariush, Oliveira, Gaethje, they all dominated him both standing up and on the ground. When you’re 38, I believe, you have to pull the brakes and there have to be people around him to say. ‘Hey, you’re aging, you have to stop.’…Fighting is a tough business. Especially, when you’re not young and you keep getting knocked out.”
Khabib retired from MMA at UFC 254 in October 2020 after his third title defense over Justin Gaethje via submission. Ferguson has lost his last three fights which include losses to Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and Beneil Dariush. Before his three-fight losing streak, Ferguson was on a twelve-fight winning streak and hadn’t lost a fight since 2012.
