The cricketing world is still in mourning following the tragic passing of spin legend Shane Warne earlier in the year, as reported by TrueBlueCasinos.org. However, the world continues on, which means decisions have needed to be made by those in charge of The Hundred.
Shane Warne was the coach of the London Spirit in the inaugural edition of the competition last year. However, following his death, it has been announced that Trevor Bayliss will lead the Spirit into the new campaign later this summer.
Bayliss Honoured To Have The Role
The Hundred was one of the big cricketing events of the summer in the United Kingdom last year. It immediately captivated audiences young and old around the country. Bayliss was announced as the new head coach of the Spirit just before the draft selections were made a couple of weeks ago. Bayliss admitted that he was looking forward to building on the work that Warne had done during the inaugural season of The Hundred last year.
However, that season wasn’t the best start for the Spirit as they finished bottom of the regular season standings. That meant that they failed to make it through to finals day. The men’s team finished eighth in the standings, and picked up just one victory during the regular season. They ended the competition with an NRR of -0.641, which was the second worst in the regular standings.
Who Will Be Lining Up For The Spirit This Season?
The majority of the squad has now been set, with a number of star players set to be taking to the field for the Spirit. The team will once again be captained by England star Eoin Morgan, who will be looking to build on an impressive first outing with the Spirit last year. Glenn Maxwell could have the responsibility of hitting the runs that the Spirit really lacked last year, as the Australian is one of the highest earners for the team this season.
Maxwell should be capable of scoring the big innings, having hit 1,982 runs in 84 T20 internationals during his career. He also boasts an impressive bowling average of 27.61, which gives the Spirit some much needed fire power with the ball. Another star within the Spirit squad this season is the recently drafted Kieron Pollard. The West Indies international boasts skills with both the ball and bat. During his T20 international career, he has scored nearly 2,000 runs from 101 matches. Meanwhile, he has taken just over 40 wickets. His bowling average in T20 format is 28.28.
What Experience Does Bayliss Bring?
There is certainly an expectancy that the Spirit will improve following a disappointing first season in The Hundred last season. Trevor Bayliss will certainly be at the front of that, as he has a huge reputation among cricketing fans in England. He will be forever remembered as the man that led the national side to the Cricket World Cup in 2019, and he has also enjoyed stints with Sri Lanka and Sydney Sixers. His experience in the shorter form of the game will be one of his biggest skills, as he has coached both the Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
During his time in the IPL with the Knight Riders, he experienced a lot of success. He led the franchise to the IPL championship on two occasions, with his first victory coming in 2012, before he added a second victory two years later. He also had joy during his time with the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, as he won the BBL title in the 2011-12 season, and also coached the team to glory in the CLT20 during the same season.
Who Will Be The Leading Sides In The Hundred?
The first edition of The Hundred was a very tight affair, with just four points separating top and fifth. The Birmingham Phoenix will be looking to go one better this season, as they were narrowly denied success in the competition last year, as they were beaten in the final by the Southern Brave. Once again, the Phoenix have an incredibly deep squad, with Moeen Ali, Liam Livingston and Kane Richardson all available.
The Brave come into the 2022 season as the defending champions, as they beat the Phoenix by 32 runs in the final. Paul Stirling was excellent in the final last year, as he scored 61. Meanwhile, James Vince and Tymal Mills will be integral for their chances of back-to-back titles.
