From April 28 through April 30, 2022, the 87th annual NFL draft was held in Paradise, Nevada, at the Caesars Forum on the Las Vegas Strip, and was broadcast live on ESPN among the wide variety of sports. The tournament kicked off on April 27 and ran through April 29. There were three rounds of competition in total. On Saturday, April 30, the fourth through seventh rounds of the draft were completed. The NFL Draft was held in Sin City for the first time this year.

  • Georgia Bulldogs

To begin the 2022 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Georgia defensive end Travon Walker first overall. Setting the tone for the three-day event was a key component. Early and often, Georgia players were preferred by NFL teams. A number of notable draft records were set by the Bulldogs. The most players ever drafted in the first round came from a single defense with five first-round picks. In a seven-round draft, a school can only have 15 draft picks. For the second year in a row, the number of players drafted by the NFL was the highest ever for Georgia.

  • LSU Tiger

The NFL draft of 2022 has finally taken place after months of preparation. Although the Tigers’ draft class was not as strong as in recent years, they continued the NFLSU tradition by selecting 10 players over the course of the three-day draft process. To some, Derek Stingley Jr., a cornerback, stood out in that group, which was picked third overall by Houston. Nevertheless, Stingley’s impressive Pro Day following his recovery from a Lisfranc fracture helped him land in the top five of the draft.

  • Cincinatti Bearcats

Previously, the Bengals had the distinction of having the most first-round picks in a calendar year (2009). Since at least 1990, they’ve had the most successful Group of Five Draft class. There were nine Bearcats drafted, which was the third-highest number of any school. For the first time in the history of the AAC, the Bearcats had the most draft picks from a single team in a single draft.

  • Penn State Nittany Lions

Over the course of the weekend, eight Penn State football players were selected by the NFL. There have been six other times when Penn State has had more than six picks in a single draft during the James Franklin era, including 2018 and 2019. Alabama, a perennial NFL factory, had one more player drafted this year than Penn State, which finished the draft with seven players.

  • Oklahoma Sooners

With seven selections in the 262 picks, the Oklahoma Sooners had an excellent draft weekend despite not having a first-round pick for the second year in a row. The Denver Broncos drafted Nik Bonitto at No. 64 overall, making him the icing on the cake. The only other top 100 pick on day two was Brian Asamoah, who was selected by the Minnesota Vikings. The Cleveland Browns and the Denver Broncos drafted the Oklahoma Sooners numerous times.

Conclusion

Nine offensive linemen have been chosen in the first round since 2013. Only one quarterback was drafted in the first round in 1997, and no running backs were drafted in the first round since 2014. Only half of the teams with first-round picks selected players from the other teams. The lack of high-profile prospects was blamed for the high number of trades this year.
