It’s been 20 years since the Notre Dame baseball team has been to the Omaha and the College World Series. Notre Dame beat the #1 ranked Tennessee Vols to earn their first trip to Omaha, in 20 years!
It’s been a great year for Notre Dame baseball! They ended up having one of the best regular seasons that the University has ever had. This game against the Volunteers was a chance to show the world who they are, and they delivered with the biggest upset in the 2022 NCAA Baseball season!
Despite being down 3-1 entering the seventh inning, the Notre Dame bats went to work. First, it was David LaManna sneaking a two-run home run out of the yard to tie the game. It was only his second home run all year — quite the time for it. The very next batter was Jack Brannigan who clubbed a solo shot to left field to give the Fighting Irish the 4-3 lead.
The magnitude of the upset was evident at the final out as Notre Dame players stormed the field in front of stands packed with Tennessee fans anticipating a sendoff to Omaha. Disappointed Tennessee players could only watch from the dugout as Notre Dame players dogpiled onto the Lindsey Nelson Stadium pitching mound. Let’s see if the Fighting Irish can take home the trophy!
