The New York Empire win the 2020 World TeamTennis Championship in a WILD Finish – @WorldTeamTennis

The New York Empire are officially your 2020 World TeamTennis champs and they did it in impressive fashion. New York was down 13-16 going into the 5th and final set, which was Women’s Doubles, and needed to win in order to tie and push the match into Extended play and then Super Tie Breaker. The duo of CoCo Vandeweghe & Nicole Melichar beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Genie Bouchard to extend it into extended play down 18-20. Even if one team is up at then end of the match with the amount of game wins, if the losing team wins the 5th set then the match is pushed into extended play where that losing team has to win every game.

New York was able to win the next two games to push it to a super tie breaker and despite Chicago subbing Sloane Stephens in for Genie Bouchard to try to get spike some energy, New York went on to beat them 7-6 in the Super Tie Breaker in epic fashion.

As a fan watching on TV I could easily tell that the energy on the court was high and it was a great look for World TeamTennis. Such an exhilarating match. Congrats to the New York Empire on not only a great season but a fantastic playoff run this weekend.
