The Kansas City Chiefs have been the NFL’s hottest team in recent years. They have won two out of the last four Super Bowls and finished as runners-up on one occasion too.

The Chiefs have made rapid progress in building a true dynasty in the NFL led by Patrick Mahomes in the past five years. However, this year they could achieve their biggest landmark yet – they could become the first team to retain the Super Bowl trophy in almost 20 years.

The last team to go back-to-back in the NFL was the New England Patriots when they won the Super Bowl in 2004 and 2005 in which the legendary Tom Brady was instrumental.

If the Chiefs were to match the Patriots feat of almost two decades ago, then they would write themselves into history as one of the NFL’s greatest teams ever.

Chiefs are amongst the leading favorites to win Super Bowl

The Chiefs shocked the footballing world when they produced a second-half comeback to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, and they look well-equipped to go all the way again this year. The Super Bowl odds offer them at +450, they are not quite the outright favorite though according to NFL tips as the Eagles are more likely to get their revenge.

The Kansas-based team will have no straightforward path to securing a crucial piece of history this season, although that is indicative of the remarkable size of the potential accomplishment.

The Chiefs would join an exclusive club of historical back-to-back winners which would have eternal impacts on the franchise legacy. It would also massively help Mahomes’ individual legacy as it would solidify his position amongst the all-time greats.

But who are the franchises that the Chiefs could replicate in retaining the NFL’s biggest prize this year?

The first-ever back-to-back champions

The first-ever back-to-back champions recorded the feat as quickly as was possible. In the Super Bowl’s first two editions in 1967 and 1968, the Green Bay Packers claimed the honors in each – the first of which happened to come against the Chiefs.

The Packers were led by veteran quarterback Bart Starr who averaged more than 2,000 yards per season throughout their repeat triumphs.

Pittsburgh Steelers went back-to-back twice

The Pittsburgh Steelers own a unique NFL record of having been the only team to go back-to-back twice in the Super Bowl era.

They first won the 1975 and 1976 editions of the fixture, immediately after the Miami Dolphins won two straight championships in the prior years. The Steelers retained the Super Bowl for a second time in 1980 after winning the 1979 XIII fixture.

Other franchises that have experienced double success

No team has ever won three Super Bowls in a row, although perhaps that could be the Chiefs’ next objective if their ambitions are met this season.

Other teams to have retained the trophy since the Super Bowl’s inauguration in 1966 are the San Francisco 49ers – who should be in the mix to be 2024 champions – The Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos. Besides, of course, the most recent team to manage a double success – the star-studded Patriots team of the 2000s.

Winning two straight NFL Championships is clearly an immensely difficult task considering very few teams have managed it. However, the Chiefs have a stacked roster and one of the greatest ever players in the making in Mahomes, they are certainly capable of securing a level of domination that no team has managed in almost 20 years.
