Thanks to some late inning heroics by Jacoby Jones yesterday and CJ Cron today, the Detroit Tigers were able to win two of three against the Cincinnati Reds to open the Major League season.

Jones launched a 2-run home run in the ninth inning yesterday, and Cron hit a 2-run shot in the ninth inning of today’s game. Both homers made the difference in the game and allowed the Tigers to win their first series of the year.

Detroit signed Cron this offseason and the one year deal is already paying off. In the first three games of the season, Cron has four hits in 11 at-bats with two home runs and 4 RBI with a .462/1.000/1.462 OBP/SLG/OPS slash line.

With the announcement that the the MLB would have a 16 team playoff this year, the Tigers have a fairly realistic shot at making the post season this year.

After having the first overall pick two of the last three years, the expanded playoff gives Detroit a real chance to enter the post season tournament. They lack depth in the batting order, but can pitch well enough to be in the top 16 when the season ends.

winning 2 of 3 against a tough Reds team is a great first step.
