The Cavaliers Surprise Conference Push and Donovan Mitchell’s MVP Chances

Going into the new NBA season, the Cleveland Cavaliers certainly did not harbor genuine ambitions of becoming champions next year, but their strong start has shown signs that they could potentially ignite a huge shock this season.

This season, Donovan Mitchell has stepped up and led the team on the court after arriving from Utah Jazz and he has not only satisfied expectations but exceeded them in his impressive start since joining. Mitchell has averaged 29.8 points a game this season which is an exceptional feat that compares to some of the NBA’s leading stars. It is a huge improvement on his 25.9-point average with the Jazz last season.

Outright Odds

The Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks are the favorites to win the overall NBA Championship, but the Cavaliers are certainly likely to upset their aspirations this season. Every season, fans bet on who’s most likely to win or on their favorite teams, but it’s important to stay safe whilst betting. Here are a number of recommended websites to ensure your safety when betting on the NBA this season. As it stands, BetMGM offers the Cavaliers at +800 to win the Eastern Conference, narrowly preferred over the Brooklyn Nets to potentially upset the big favorites of the Bucks and Celtics at +900. Betting has grown hugely all over the United States in the past few years and Ohio has been no exception especially due to the strong form of the Cavaliers in the NBA in recent times.

Championship Pedigree

The Cavaliers are no strangers to qualifying for the NBA finals having done so led by LeBron James in a four-year consecutive run from 2015 to 2018. And they have also been NBA Champions before, which they achieved in the finals of 2016. They produced an extraordinary comeback against the Golden State Warriors which demonstrated that they are capable of upsetting the odds and downing heavy favorites, even on the largest occasions.

The prestige of playing for a team that has already won a championship certainly lifts a large amount of pressure from the current playing staff. The likes of the Phoenix Suns who have never been an NBA Champion have been seen to struggle to get over the hurdle and win their first title. Often they have capitulated after holding big leads and struggled to close games out, possibly due to the pressure of being the first to ever bring an NBA success back to their team’s city.

The Cavalier players themselves do not have the greatest level of experience amongst them, but having the backing of fans that have experienced success before is invaluable. There’s a lack of desperation to finally win an NBA title and instead an expectation to produce further success, and this mentality can be endowed onto the players.

As well as the potential of a surprise championship win for the Cavaliers, Mitchell could be in the running to gain the Most Valuable Player award, although it would take a remarkable level of consistency to better the performances of the likes of Giannis Antekoumpo. However, Mitchell is a three-time NBA all-star and is certainly capable of competing with the best.
