Stan Van Gundy is back in the league. This time he will be coaching Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans. The last time Van Gundy coached in the league was in 2018 with the Detroit Pistons. Gundy’s first head coaching gig was with the Miami Heat in 2003, then went to Orlando in 2007. He made one finals appearance with Dwight Howard and the Magic in 2009, where the Lakers beat the Magic. Throughout his career in the regular season, Gundy compiled a record of 523-384. Only four active coaches have more career victories.
Van Gundy will now have the role of building up this young Pelicans roster full of potential. Now, is he is the right man for the job? We will have to wait to see. He had success in Orlando with a young team. His failures in Detroit stick out but that’s not all on him. That franchise has been a mess for the last decade. I’m excited to see how SVG can develop better these young players like Zion and Ingram. You know SVG has to be pumped to coach a freak like Zion. Hopefully, we get another album cover photo with Van Gundy in New Orleans.
