Spring Training Overreaction: Miggy is Back in MVP Form

Written by Nik D

Everyone, stay calm!

I’m trying to tell myself not to overreact, but I just can’t help it; Miguel Cabrera is hitting like the 2008-2016 version of Miguel Cabrera so far this spring. He looks to be in the best shape in recent memory, and if he can stay healthy all year, could he get back to his old ways?

Before you jump on me, take a look at these two home runs off of the $300+ million dollar man Gerrit Cole:

All I can say is wow.

Last season, Miggy suffered from injuries and could never find his power stroke, connecting on only 12 home runs with a career low .398 slugging % and was worth precisely 0.0 WAR according to baseball reference.

Is it a bit premature to crown Cabrera with another triple crown? Absolutely it is. I am still holding out hope that maybe he can get back to a bit of his old ball crushing ways and hit at least 25+ bombs this year. He is sitting at 477 home runs for his career and it would be pretty cool to see him reach the 500 mark this year.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, if Cabrera can’t improve upon last season’s numbers, they will still have to pay him $124 million over the next 4 years. The Tigers need his bat to wake up if they are to avoid having the worst record in the Major Leagues, a feat they have accomplished twice in the past three seasons.
