Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers signed a new contract with the Green Bay Packers back in March, locking him down for a further three years at the franchise. However, the way this season has gone for the QB and team, there are now doubts about whether he will return to the Packers in 2023.

Green Bay is 4-7 after its opening 11 games of the season, and it is looking increasingly likely that they will miss out on a place in the playoffs at the end of the campaign. The last time they failed to reach the postseason was in 2018 when they finished 6-9-1.

Minnesota Vikings are running away with the NFC North division. They are 8-2 after 10 games and -10000 in the NFL betting odds to lift the divisional title. Green Bay will need to finish the season strongly and hope the Vikings falter if they are to jump ahead of them at the end of the campaign.

In Green Bay’s defeat to the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field, some sections of the home crowd booed Rodgers, something he will not be familiar with during his 17 years with the franchise.

Relationship Strained with Head Coach

It has been well-documented that Rodgers and Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur have not always been on the same page this season. The Packers QB was on camera shouting at his head coach during their game with the Dallas Cowboys in week nine, as he did not agree with a decision made at the end of the fourth quarter.

There have also been cryptic messages made by both men in interviews in the campaign. Rodgers claimed their offense needed to be ‘simplified’ in an interview. LaFleur responded by saying he did not know what that meant.

Normally in the NFL, when a player falls out with the head coach, it leads to one of them departing from the franchise. If Green Bay still believe LaFleur is the man to lead the Packers back to Super Bowl glory, it could be their star QB who is shown the exit door on this occasion.

Rodgers Has Been Linked With the 49ers Before

The San Francisco 49ers are a franchise that has been linked with Rodgers at various points throughout his career. Some reports suggest made an inquiry about his availability in 2021, but they were knocked back.

The 49ers have had problems with quarterbacks over the last few years. Jimmy Garoppolo was demoted to backup QB going into the 2022 campaign, but he is now their starter again due to injuries.

If Rodgers became available in early 2023, the 49ers would be one of the teams likely to be interested in doing a deal with Green Bay. Rodgers is 38 years old now, however, teams in the NFL are often happy to do short-term deals with experienced QBs who they believe can help give them immediate success.

It is going to be fascinating to see how the Rodgers saga plays out at Green Bay. Results in the final third of the season could determine his fate.
