Russell Wilson Has One-Year To Prove Himself In Denver

Written by Tony Ghaul

NFL insider Matthew Berry of NBC Sports Edge has reported that “more than one person mentioned” to him during this year’s NFL combine that Broncos QB Russell Wilson “is basically on a one-year audition” working under new Head Coach Sean Payton.

Wilson struggled mightily throughout his first season with the Broncos, after agreeing to a five-year extension reportedly worth $245 million with $165 million guaranteed ahead of the 2022 season.

Wilson reportedly recruited Payton to accept the Broncos head-coaching job. Terry Bradshaw, Payton’s former colleague with Fox, suggested that he took job knowing if Wilson doesn’t perform this year, then the way his contract is structured would make it slightly easier for them to get rid of him at the end of the year.

If the sources behind the story are correct, Wilson will have to prove his worth this year to remain in Denver.
