Mike Minor just a year ago looked poised for a big free agency deal. Coming out of 2019, he had just posted a career year: his first MLB All-Star selection. As a member of the Texas Rangers, the lefty posted a 3.59 ERA in over 200 innings of work. He also reached the 200 K plateau for the first time in his career.

Minor, across four MLB teams, has a 3.98 lifetime ERA through his age 32 season. 2020 was rather forgettable, as he went 1-6 with a 5.56 ERA across time with Texas and divisional foe Oakland Athletics. The down year severely hurt his chances to get a big payday. Now, he will pitch for the Kansas City Royals in 2021.

This isn’t his first time in a Royals uniform though. Following a tumultuous run with the Atlanta Braves that ended in 2014, Minor didn’t pitch again in the Majors until 2017. In the 2015 offseason, he signed a two year deal in Kansas City despite knowing he’d miss all of 2016 due to shoulder issues. The Royals were fresh off of a World Series victory when he inked the contract.

He pitched 77 2/3rd innings in relief in his only season with the Royals that saw him see a lot of success with a 2.55 ERA. That’s when the former first rounder proceeded to sign in Arlington on a 3-year/$28M commitment. Jeff Passan of ESPN is currently reporting that the deal of the multi-year variety, but the fiscal terms haven’t been disclosed yet. PSE will keep you updated.
