Phillies will wind up with one of elite shorstops

There are a slew of elite shortstops on the Major League Baseball free agent market and the Philadelphia Phillies are in need of one for the 2023 season.

According to one MLB insider, it isn’t a matter of if the Philadelphia Phillies will land a big-name free agent shortstop this offseason, but rather a matter of when and which one.

In a tweet, ESPN’s Buster Olney says the Phillies will wind up with one the top free agent shortstops.

The Phillies have “a good chance” to sign Trea Turner, considered by many to be at the top of the free agent shortstop class. Considered Philadelphia’s “top target” this offseason, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Turner would bring an immediate impact to the Phillies lineup, especially with the news that Bryce Harper will be out of the lineup at the beginning of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Turner spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and finished the 2022 season with a .298 average, 21 home runs and 100 RBIs.
