Philadelphia Phillies pitching prospect Andrew Baker was impressive in his first MLB Spring Training action against the New York Yankees.
The hard throwing right-hander struck out two batters in the seventh inning of Saturday’s 7-4 victory over the Yankees. His fastball nearly reached 99 miles-per-hour.
Baker was the No. 28-ranked Phillies prospect last year by MLB Pipeline. In the Minors last season, he registered 102 on the radar gun.
Baker started out at High-A Jersey Shore and earned a promotion to Double-A Reading to close out the year. Overall, he had a 3.98 ERA with 11.9 strikeouts per nine in 46 appearances.
The Phillies selected Baker in the 11th round of the 2021 Draft. He initially struggled with his command, but began to figure things out last year.
While Baker might not be a candidate to crack the major-league bullpen out of camp, performances like yesterday, could have him on the big club real soon.
