The Philadelphia Phillies named Aaron Nola the Opening Day Starting pitcher against the Texas Rangers, the team announced Friday.
It marks the sixth consecutive year Nola will start the first game of the season for the Phillies. Steve Carlton (10) and Robin Roberts (12) are the only other Phillies pitchers to start at least six consecutive Opening Days for the team.
Nola will face Jacob deGrom, who is entering year one of a five-year, $185 million contract with the Rangers.
In 2022, Nola posted a 3.25 ERA while striking out 235 and walking only 29 batters. He finished fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting.
Nola become a free agent at the end of 2023 barring an agreement on a contract extension.
