Notre Dame junior QB Tyler Buchner announced that he intends to enter the transfer portal.

Buchner did note in his release that returning to Notre Dame is still an option.

Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman is expected to be the starter, but Buchner was likely going to maintain a role in the offense.

Hartman and Buchner battled during the spring but it was clear that Hartman would likely be the starter. The veteran was outstanding in the Blue-Gold Game while Buchner struggled.

Buchner started three games last season, including Notre Dame’s 45-38 Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina. He was named the MVP of that game after passing for 273 yards, rushing for 61 yards and accounting for five touchdowns.

Buchner will evaluate all of his options and then decide if he wants to return to Notre Dame in a back up role to QB Sam Hartman.

If Buchner leaves, sophomore Steve Angeli and true freshman Kenny Minchey will battle it out for the backup QB role.
