Notre Dame names starting QB

In a press conference on Saturday, Notre Dame announced that sophomore Tyler Buchner will be it’s starting quarterback. The Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman said that it was a difficult decision. Buchner was in competition with Drew Pyne for the starting position.

Tyler Buchner is a dual-threat quarterback who appeared in 10 games in 2021. He completed 21 of 35 passes for 298 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He rushed 336 yards on 46 carries for three touchdowns. He played mostly as a change-of-pace player for starter Jack Coan.

Buchner was a four-star recruit in Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class. Buchner was recently declared by ESPN as one of the 25 most important players in the College Football Playoff race.

On the same day Buchner was named starting QB, it was announced that starting wide receiver Avery Davis will miss the season with a torn ACL. Davis had previously injured the ACL in his left knee last November, which forced him to miss the final month of the season.

Notre Dame opens the season on the road against perennial powershouse Ohio State. This will be a thought test for the Fighting Irish.
