Northwestern fired Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald. The decision comes after reports from former players of alleged hazing and a “culture enabling racism.”

Northwestern President Michael Schill released a statement Monday afternoon saying, “This afternoon, I informed Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald that he was being relieved of his duties effective immediately.”

Northwestern initially suspended Fitzgerald for two weeks. Officials reconsidered due to public outcry and graphic details published in the Daily Northwestern.

An anonymous former Northwestern player sent ESPN a screenshot of a whiteboard, which he says was in the middle of the locker room. Image is headlined “SHREK’S LIST” and includes a list of players’ names and several bulleted items, including “naked slingshot” and “naked bear crawls,” as per Adam Rittenberg.

The “cultural racism” was never mentioned in the executive summary of the university’s hazing investigation.

There is definitely big problems with the Northwestern program. Neither accusation is a good look.

Firing Fitzgerald, may be just the first step, but there is a serious problem going on in this program.

Fitzgerald needed to be removed as Head Coach. This program needs to do an internal house cleaning. More people will lose their job over this despicable situation.
