It appears that 2021 is the year of unruly fans at sporting events. Just yesterday, Washington Wizards star Russell Westbrook was showered in popcorn from a fan that was unhappy about something. Likely the Wizards terrible play against the 76ers that night, but it was no reason to dump a box of popcorn on Westbrook who was just trying to leave the court due to an ankle injury.
Unfortunately, another fan/player interaction happened yesterday during Game 2 of the Hawks and Knicks series. A Knicks fan actually spit on Atlanta Hawks player Trae Young. If you watch the below video you closely, you can see the spit heading towards Young’s back.
Fortunately, the New York Knicks management took swift action and have already punished the fan who conducted this heinous act.
The team said in a statement Thursday they “investigated the matter and determined that this patron, who is not a season ticket holder, did indeed spit on Trae Young, and for that reason, he is now banned from The Garden indefinitely.”
“We apologize to Trae and the entire Atlanta Hawks organization for this fan’s behavior. This was completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our venue. We have turned the information over to the appropriate authorities.”
The Knicks also posted the following on their Twitter account earlier today.
