New England Patriots Locker Room Split On Who Should Be Quarterback

Written by Tony Ghaul

New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick said there was no quarterback controversy last season.

Devin McCourty revealed last month the players in the locker room were actually split last year on whether Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe should be the starting quarterback.

Sportscaster Dan Patrick said this week when he asked a former Patriots player source to check whether there was a split between the two quarterbacks in the locker room. Days would pass before the player said, “There is a lot of support for Bailey Zappe.”

The Patriots selected Mac Jones in the first-round of the 2021 draft to be their franchise QB. He had a really good rookie season leading the team to 10 wins.

During the 2022 season, Jones regressed. Meanwhile, rookie Bailey Zappe looked very solid and brought excitement to the Patriots offense.

Zappe looked more comfortable than Jones leading the team. The Patriots fan base booed Jones and cheered for Zappe.

The Patriots offensive problems started in the preseason when Belichick decided to put Matt Patricia, a defensive coach, in charge of the offense.

Patricia and Jones didn’t see eye to eye, and it caused dysfunction on offense. Jones angered Belichick when he reached out to outside sources about the offense.
