As predicted, no legitimate NBA stars were dealt in 2024’s trade deadline. However, despite the relative snoozefest that was previously predicted, there were still some deals that came at a surprise for most NBA fans.
While the top teams mostly refrained from engaging in massive moves to tweak their roster, some middle-of-the-pack teams jumped at the opportunity to solidify their rotations in the second half of the season.
We at Proportsextra will grade each significant NBA trade deadline transaction. This is part one.
Pacers receive: Doug McDermott
Spurs receive: Marcus Morris Sr., 2nd rd pick, cash
Grades – Pacers: B, Spurs: B-
This is a good trade for Indiana due to the departure of Buddy Hield in a separate trade. Marcus Morris Sr. will likely be waived but the Spurs got a future 2nd rounder for McDermott, plus cash.
Nets receive: Keita Bates-Diop, Jordan Goodwin, three 2nd rds
Grizzlies receive: Chimezie Metu, Yuta Watanabe, pick swap
Suns receive: Royce O’Neale, David Roddy
Grades – Nets: A, Grizzlies: C, Suns: A-
The biggest haul was the three second rounders for the Nets. Grizzlies have already looked ahead in the future as this is already a lost season for the franchise. The Suns unexpectedly added depth to their roster with O’Neale and Roddy. Those two will play a huge part in their playoff push this season.
Sixers receive: Cameron Payne, 2nd rd pick
Bucks receive: Patrick Beverley
Grades – Sixers: B+, Bucks: B
Payne didn’t fit well with the Bucks but a change of scenery may be good for him. Beverley will undoubtedly bring some toughness in that Bucks locker room as they are struggling so far with Doc Rivers at the helm.
Nets receive: Dennis Schröder, Thaddeus Young
Toronto receive: Spencer Dinwiddie
Grades – Raptors: D, Nets: C
Dinwiddie will be bought out as Toronto just wants to clear some cap space with this deal. The Nets might waive Young but plan to keep Schröder this season as they are vulnerable in that position with Ben Simmons slowly getting back into shape.
Mavs receive: PJ Washington, two 2nd rds
Hornets receive: Grant Williams, Seth Curry, 2027 1st rd pick
Grades – Mavs: A, Hornets: B+
Mavs got their man and Luka is reportedly ‘ecstatic’ about the move to acquire Washington. It is reported that Williams has worn out his welcome in Dallas and a change of scenery was inevitable. Seth Curry has now been traded by the Mavs three separate times.
