The New York Yankees haven’t decided if they will keep Aaron Boone yet as their manager,especially since they haven’t discussed a new contract with him and his deal is set to expire.
If Boone, who just lead the Yankees to a 92-70 season and a fourth straight postseason appearance, doesn’t return to the Yankees, the San Diego Padres are reportedly interested in his services.
The Padres dismissed Jayce Tingler as their manager at the end of the 2021 regular season following a collapse at the end of the year.
As Buster Olney from ESPN noted, the Padres are looking at all kinds of big names; even Bruce Bochy, who had retired from managing and was a former manager for the Padres when they reached the 1998 World Series.
In four seasons with the Yankees, Boone is 328-128 as the manager, but has yet to make it to the World Series. His closest appearance was in 2019 when the Yankees won 103 games and reached the ALCS, but failed against the Houston Astros.
The Yankees reportedly may be inclined to keep Boone, as owner Hal Steinbrenner does like Boone, despite some in the organization who have complained about him.
Whether Boone chooses to come back will fall on the shoulders of Boone, who didn’t sound too sure if he would be retained as the manager after the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs by the Boston Red Sox 6-2 in the Wild Card Game.
It sure does seem like Boone does have options though, and he’ll get the chance to pick between at least two prime organizations.
