MLB Free Agency: Detroit Tigers closing in to sign Mets’ Javier Baez to six-year deal.

In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the Detroit Tigers decided to take another big free agent off the market.

Detroit is close to signing Javier Baez to a six-year deal.

The dollar amount of the six-year deal for Baez had not been announced.

Baez spent the 2021 season playing for the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, hitting .265 with 31 home runs and 87 RBI in 138 games.

Many had thought Baez would return to New York to p,as alongside his best friend in Francisco Lindor, but the Tigers had an opening at shortstop and were willing to spend.

Baez was one of the latest players to land in Detroit; Eduardo Rodriguez signed a five-year deal and they also traded for Tucker Barnhart.

With the Tigers signing Baez, it likely takes Detroit out of the running for Carlos Correa, who many thought would land in Detroit with AJ Hinch there. But they opted to spend less and landed Baez instead.
