Michigan’s Mazi Smith Puts On A Show At The Combine Bench Press

Written by Tony Ghaul

Michigan’s Mazi Smith stunned everybody with 34 reps on the bench press at the NFL Scouting Combine. It was the most reps of any defensive lineman.

Last summer, Michigan reported Smith as pushing 20-plus reps of 325 pounds (not the typical 225) and a max bench of 550 pounds. He is touted as college football’s No. 1 “freak.”

Smith is projected to go as a Day 2 pick in mock drafts, but with his impressive run at the NFL Combine so far, he could find his way into the end of the first round depending on how the rest of the week plays out.

The 6-feet-3 and 323 pounds Smith is going to wait until Michigan’s pro-day event on March 17 to run the 40-yard dash and other speed drills, according to ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid.

In his final season at Michigan, he finished with 49 total tackles, one sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
