New York Mets All-Star closer, was removed from the field in Miami in a wheelchair after he was injured during Team Puerto Rico’s postgame celebration following a 5-2 victory over the Dominican Republic.
Díaz was helped off the field by trainers without putting weight on his right leg. He was helped into a wheelchair and taken off the field.
A serious injury to Díaz would be a massive blow for the Mets. He’s coming off a great season. Diaz had 32 saves with 118 strikeouts in 62 innings and a 1.31 ERA.
The 28-year-old Diaz signed a five-year, $102MM contract days before the start of free agency. That marked the largest commitment to a relief pitcher in MLB history.
The Mets released a statement saying Diaz will receive imaging on the knee on Thursday and an update will be provided when appropriate.
