During the third inning of the Diamondbacks game against the Cardinals, Bumgarner did not appreciate a hard swing and post-swing grunt from Willson Contreras. All Contreras did was swing hard and make a noise.
The Cardinals broadcast picked up Bumgarner saying, “Shut the f— up, you p—-. F— you.”
Contreras emphatically flipped his bat after drawing a walk.
Things went from bad to worse for Bumgarner that very inning. The four-time All-Star pitcher surrendered four runs, culminating in a two-out, three-run home run by shortstop Tommy Edman that gave the Cardinals a 7–3 lead.
Bumgarner’s reaction is now going viral. His explosion on Contreras is ridiculous. Pitchers, like Max Scherzer, grunt and scream when they pitch all the time.
Bumgarner was once a top pitcher, but since joining the Diamondbacks in 2020, his record is just 15-32 with an ERA over 5.00.
This year could wind up being his worst as he’s off to an absolutely miserable start to the season. He entered Wednesday’s matchup against the Cardinals at 0-2 with an ERA above 7.00.
