It seems like every couple of weeks there is a death to report of an athlete. Whether it be current or past, some of these guys just go way too soon. It was reported late last week that former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Joe Beckwith passed away.

He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals from 1979 to 1986. He threw right-handed and served primarily as a relief pitcher. Beckwith was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977 and played for two of their minor league affiliates until 1979, when the Dodgers promoted him to the major leagues. After spending three more seasons with the organization, he was traded to Kansas City. The Royals won the World Series in 1985, and he was released before the start of the following season. He returned to the Dodgers in 1986 and played his last game on September 30 that year.

Prior to playing in the major leagues, Beckwith played college ball at Auburn University. He pitched for the Tigers from 1974-77. Auburn’s head coach Butch Thompson commented on the passing of Beckwith.

“Auburn University, Auburn baseball and the Auburn community lost a legend in Joe Beckwith,” head coach Butch Thompson said. “I’m so thankful for his contributions through the years. He has represented us so well. I’m thankful to Auburn and our athletics department for recognizing Joe and his family a few weeks ago at Plainsman Park.

“I’ll never forget his friendship and how he stayed connected and continued to root for his alma mater and for this baseball team,” Thompson added. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe and his family during this time.”

In other MLB news, trade rumors are running rampant throughout the league. The most recent rumor has been that the Minnesota Twins may be trading Jose Berrios. Check out the video below to learn more about this potential trade that could happen in the coming weeks!
