Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan publicly reprimanded head coach Urban Meyer after his lap dance scandal and called his conduct “inexcusable.” This is the first time that the team owner has addressed the controversey that has captivated the internet. His full statement also addresses Meyer’s apology.
Since the controversial video of Meyer dancing with a blonde female (whose identity has been revealed) in a bar has hit the internet, rumors have been circulating that Meyer’s credibility within the Jaguars organization has reached a boiling point. Tough look after the team owner says that the head coach has to “regain the team’s trust and respect” after such a short tenure. Many view the team owner publicly shaming his head coach as writing on the wall especially after starting 0-4 for the 2021 season.
CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee said Urban is leaving the Jags organization. Read what he said here.
Meyer held a press conference and publicly apologized to the organization and his family. He addressed private conversations he had with the team and staff. He said that he apologized to his family and they were upset about the video. Meyer’s wife, Shelley, reacted to the lap dance video via Twitter.
“I just apologized to the team and the staff for being a distraction. Stupid. So I explained everything that happened and owned it…just stupid. I should not have myself in that kind of position. I apologized for being a distraction. A coach should not be a distraction.”
It seems as if the apology has not gone over well as Meyer described his conversations within the organization addressing the scandal. According to ESPN, “Meyer said on his radio show that the conversations he’s had with people inside the organization about what he did have been ‘horrible.’ He also reiterated his concern that he’s not sure how the incident will impact his ability to lead his team.”
“Horrible” conversations and the team owner publicly shaming the head coach doesn’t seem too promising. This scandal has affected the team. It’s not only a distraction, but Meyer cancelled a team meeting on Monday for his “apology press conference.” The Jaguars are 0-4 and if they lose to Tennessee on Sunday, all roads lead to Meyer’s days being numbered. How long until team owner, Khan, gives him the boot?
