Written by Tony Ghaul

The Atlanta Falcons are signing former Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke, as per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The contract is two years for up to $20 million, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Heinicke is going to come in and compete with Desmond Ridder for the starting QB job.

Last season, Heinicke took over for starting QB Carson Wentz and had a 5-3-1 record in the nine games that he started. He threw for 1859 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Heinicke made 15 starts in 2021, and went 7-8 as Washington missed the playoffs. In 2020, he started their playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Over the past two seasons, Heinicke completed 64.0 percent of his passes for 5,278 yards with 32 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

Heinicke is a native of Atlanta, GA.
