The Atlanta Falcons have released QB Marcus Mariota, the team announced on Tuesday morning. By cutting Mariota, the Falcons $12 million on the salary cap.
Mariota signed with Atlanta as a free agent last offseason and went 5-8 in 13 games. With his first opportunity to start since 2019, the he threw for 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions with a 61.3 completion percentage.
The decision to bench Mariota and go with rookie Desmond Ridder didn’t sit well with the veteran QB, as he went on Injured Reserve with a knee injury. Mariota left the team to go have surgery.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Mariota is only 29 years old and might still have a future in the NFL as a backup.
