The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 34-31 on a Jake Elliott 54-yard field goal with 3:58 left in overtime to remain undefeated.
It was a back and forth game, as the Eagles pass defense struggled against the Commanders.
The Eagles passing offense got on track today. QB Jalen Hurts completed 25 of 37 passes for 319 yards with two touchdown passes, both to WR A J. Brown.
Brown caught nine catches amounted to 175 yards on 13 targets. He was flagged for taunting after his big go ahead touchdown. That was a huge penalty, as it was assessed on the kickoff and the Commanders drove down the field to tie it up and send the game to overtime.
WR DeVonta Smith caught 7 passes on the day, which included a leaping 37-yard reception with :37 left in the half that helped set up a field goal at halftime.
The Eagles trailed 17-10 at the half. Besides the game winner, Elliott kicked 3 other field goals on the day.
D’Andre Swift had a rushing touchdown on 14 carries for 56 yards. The rushing attack wasn’t as strong as the first three games.
The Eagles defense struggled to stop Commanders QB Sam Howell. He completed 29 of 41 for 290 yards and a touchdown pass, while rushing for 40 yards.
The Eagles defense had strong game from LB Nicholas Morrow. He had 3 sacks and 10 tackles for the game. Haason Reddick registered his first sack of the season and Josh Sweat also had a sack.
The Eagles are now 4-0 on the season and remain atop the NFC East, but there is a lot to cleanup from this game. They committed 11 penalties and that is not acceptable. Some penalties came on crucial third downs on defense, which kept Commanders drives alive.
Games against the Commanders are always close and hard fought. The Eagles on the road to face the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday at 4:05 PM eastern time.
