Eagles Release Former First-Round Pick

Written by Tony Ghaul

Philadelphia Eagles have released former first-round pick offensive tackle Bernard Williams. The 51 year-old has been a member of the team for the past 29 years.

The Eagles selected Williams with the 14th-overall pick of the 1994 draft. He started all 16 games and earned NFL All-Rookie honors.

Williams tested positive for marijuana several times and was suspended by the league. He never played another down in the NFL.

The Eagles placed Williams on the “Reserve/Suspended by Commission-At Least One Year” list and then forgot to take him off.

The Eagles were notified by the NFL that he was still on the list and considered part of the team even though he hasn’t played since 1994.

I remember Williams. He had a heck of a rookie season. It’s a shame that he could never come back and continue what looked like a promising career.
