Over the past few years, many MLB players have come out about pitchers using foreign substances. St. Louis pitcher Giovanny Gallegos was told he needed to take off his hat, because of the clear white spot that was on the bill.

However, in today’s Dodgers-Giants, Giants pitcher Kevin Gausman was reaching towards his hat after almost every pitch, with his fingers obviously sticking to his hat.

In these cases, it’s important to distinguish the difference between getting a better grip and actually cheating. Pitchers mix sunscreen and rosin to get a better grip for better control. If they were to mix a substance together to doctor the baseball and add RPM’s to their pitches, that is cheating. Cardinals manager Mike Schildt said it best:
