The Detroit Lions announced today that they have waived Kerryon Johnson. At first it might be a little shocking just because it seems a little too early to give up on a second round pick from just 3 years ago, but even during the previous regime with Patricia, it was clear that the Lions were starting to gradually give up on the Auburn-product. They signed Adrian Peterson in 2020 and from the jump they forced him the rock instead of giving it to KJ who clearly had the fresher legs. Even though AD is a future hall of famer, if you’re a 23 year-old RB losing snaps to a 35 year-old then it’s a clear lack in trust in you from your coaches. The writing was on the wall that Kerryon was gradually being phased out of the team, and especially the free agent signing of Jamaal Williams followed up by the drafting of Jermar Jefferson in the seventh round of last week’s draft. I thought that KJ would have at least made it to training camp, knowing how new assistant head coach and running backs coach loves players who can pass block. Johnson was one of the best in the league at that. However, it shows good faith on the Lions organization that they’re letting him find a new team this early. I liked Kerryon and it’s sad to see him go, but the RB room is loaded with Swift as the clear RB1 & now Jamaal who has shown to very reliable during his time in GB, while KJ has struggled to stay available with various injuries and had issues with holding on to ball. Detroit Lions fans should wish nothing but the best for Kerryon. I’ll personally be thankful of when in 2018 against the Patriots on SNF he was the first Lions RB to rush for over 100 yards since Reggie Bush in 2013:
