Today it was announced the Detroit Lions would be hiring Indianapolis Colts running backs coach Scottie Montgomery. Montgomery is a former NFL WR who has been coaching since 2006.
This move makes complete sense for Detroit seeing they’ve been hiring former players along with the fact Montgomery has coached multiple positions will help Dan Campbell out as assistant head coach as well.
Montgomery entered the NFL in 2000 as a rookie free agent with the Carolina Panthers. From there, he played for the Denver Broncos for three years (2000–2002) and the Oakland Raiders (2003). In 2005, he played for the Georgia Force in the Arena Football League.
This hiring comes after Detroit lost RB coach Duce Staley.
The #Lions are hiring Scottie Montgomery as their Assistant Head Coach and he’ll coach the RBs, per source. Montgomery, who most recently was the #Colts RB coach, is a strong and respected veteran addition to Detroit’s staff who multiple teams have had interest in.

One thing that worries me is East Carolina University named Montgomery its head coach on December 13, 2015. Montgomery was then terminated before the 2018 season finale after posting a 9–26 record in three seasons. He couldn’t win as a head coach and that is a little scary but in reality that doesn’t matter especially with the position he will be in.
He will help players buy in more to Detroit as he is a very respectful coach. I can’t wait to see what he can do with the Lions backfield!
