Coming into today, Action Network senior gambling analyst Darren Rovell had a 200-1 wager on Northwestern to win the Big 10. Rovell’s $1,500 bet would have netted him $200k, so he spent the entire ballgame on a periscope broadcast with PointsBet, negotiating various cashout options with the sportsbook.

Rovell had his finger on the button of a $53k cashout when Northwestern lead 10-6, but as soon as he was about to press it the Wildcats came up with a timely interception, bringing his offer up to $67k. Rovell jumped on that offer, cashing out of the bet and increasing his original wager by 44x! This turned out to be perfect timing by Darren, as this INT was virtually the last positive play of the game for Northwestern, and from this point on, they proceeded to get completely anihilated by the Buckeyes, who were aided by a 300 yard game from Tre Sermon.

As much as I’d love to shit on Darren for not letting this one ride, I completely get it. This is a guy who simply knows his team. We all like to be optimistic about our teams, but when there’s north of 60 grand on the line, its time to get realistic. The $67k offer was the second highest Rovell would get all day, and it would deteriorate extremely after his acceptance. Just a beautiful thread of the needle by Rovell, and the Wildcats loss can’t hurt too bad when you walk away with nearly $70,000 in your pocket.
