The Eagles are rumored to have made a “competitive offer” to Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. They still yet to sign him to a contract extension.
The 25 year-old Gardner-Johnson was acquired by the Philadelphia Eagles via trade this past off season. He spent his first three years with the New Orleans Saints.
Last season, Gardner-Johnson recorded career-best 67 tackles, 61 solo and five tackles for loss. He also had two quarterback hits, one sack and tied for the league lead with six interceptions.
Gardner-Johnson was a key member of the Philadelphia Eagles NFC Championship team. His versatility to play safety, as well as slot cornerback, was a big help to the defense.
The Eagles want him back. It’s just a matter of how much they are willing to invest.
All-Pro Jessie Bates received $16 million per year (via Spotrac) from the Atlanta Falcons and, with all due respect to Gardner-Johnson, he is a more traditional safety without the recent injury history.
Gardner-Johnson missed time last season with a lacerated kidney. He made 12 regular season starts and started all the post season games.
The Eagles have created cap space in hopes of re-signing Gardner-Johnson. Hopefully, the two sides can come to an agreement soon.
