The Craig Kimbrel trade saga has come to a halt and all that the future Hall of Fame closer has to do is drive across town. Despite Kimbrel’s former clubs, the Braves, Padres and Red Sox, all in discussion for a trade to bring back the 8x All-Star righty. Kimbrel, who has 0.49 ERA in 36.2 IP with 23 saves in 2021, has a 2.07 ERA (2.17 FIP) in 622 career games. Kimbrel’s 371 saves is the most in the Majors over the course of his MLB career. Kimbrel has a excellent 197 ERA+ with a 14.7 K per 9 IP.
The White Sox will add to an already loaded bullpen that’s headlined by Liam Hendriks, who closed out the MLB All-Star game with a barrage of colorful words. The two-time All-Star has a 2.02 ERA since the start of 2019 across time with Oakland and Chicago. It’s noted that Hendriks and Kimbrel will split closer duties the rest of the way, and presumably next year should they exercised Kimbrel’s option this offseason.
Heading back to the Cubs, second baseman Nick Madrigral. Madrigral has a 112 OPS+ over his first 83 games, 12% better than the league-average over that stretch. Madrigal hit .340 in the 2020 shortened season, and has a .305 batting average in 54 games in 2021. Joining him will be fellow Major Leaguer Codi Heuer. Heuer had a 1.52 ERA in the 2020 season.
