The Braves this season expected to have a stacked rotation, led by longtime ace Cole Hamels, 2019 NL Cy Young contender Mike Soroka, Max Fried, 2018 All Star Mike Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb.

While Max Fried may win the NL Cy Young, Newcomb and Foltynewicz were designated for assignment. Soroka is out for the year with a freak ankle injury. Cole Hamels? He made one start on a one year, $18M pact after a second half oblique injury ruined his 2019 with the Cubs. This year the achilles heel has been the triceps, which he injured in Spring Training.

In his one start in Baltimore, Hamels pitched only 3 1/3rd with 2 strikeouts, giving up 3 earned runs. It will be his only start of the season, and potentially his only start as a Brave. For the Braves, this is a big blow as you were betting to have him in the postseason. The four time All-Star has pitched in the postseason for the Phillies (including a 2008 championship), Rangers and Cubs. In the regular season, he has a lifetime 3.43 ERA in 2698 IP. He’s been a workhorse over his MLB tenure, just not for Atlanta.
