The Houston Astros are closing in on a deal with free agent first baseman Jose Abreu, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, with Ken Rosenthal of Athletic confirming he and the club are in agreement on a deal. Nightengale says it’s expected to be a three-year deal, though the financials are not yet publicly known.

Abreu spent the first nine years of his career playing for the Chicago White Sox, where he slashed .292/.354/.860 with 243 home runs and 863 RBI.

Last season, Abreu had a .304 batting average with 15 home runs, 75 RBI, and 85 runs. He walked a career-high 62 times while striking out 110 times, the lowest in his last three full seasons.
