Could Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos be interested in purchasing the San Diego Chargers? That’s the question being asked after the sister of the Chargers franchise’s controlling owner moved to force a sale. The Los Angeles Times is reporting:

In an attempt to force the sale of the Chargers, a sister of controlling owner Dean Spanos filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday. In it, she argues that mounting debt has imperiled the family’s finances and that the only solution is to put the NFL franchise on the market.

The petition by Dea Spanos Berberian, who serves as co-trustee of the family trust along with her brother, alleges the trust’s debts and expenses exceed $353 million. In addition, according to the filing, the trust doesn’t have a plan to pay more than $22 million it has pledged to charities.

The Los Angeles Times discussed Jeff Bezos’ past interest in purchasing an NFL team with his name being mentioned as a potential new owner for the Detroit Lions, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Washington Football team. According to the Times:

Jeff Bezos, whose net worth is more than $180 billion, could easily afford to buy the Chargers. Dea Spanos Berberian, sister of Chargers controlling owner Dean Spanos, filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court asking it to order the sale of the team. Her petition notes that Bezos has expressed interest in buying an NFL team, which would take the financial burden off of the Spanos family.

A Bezos buy could bring some financial stability to the team, but given Billionaire Jeff’s past football flirtations, don’t hold your breath waiting for this purchase.
