Alabama Athletic Director Arrested

Written by Tony Ghaul

Alabama deputy athletic director Matt Self was arrested over the weekend and charged with third-degree domestic violence, according to multiple reports.

Law enforcement was called out after midnight and after an investigation, Self was arrested. He was placed on a 24-hour domestic violence hold with a bond set at $300.

On Monday, the University of Alabama released the following statement via an athletics department spokesperson:

“Alabama Athletics is aware of this incident. We take such matters seriously and will continue to gather more information to address this personnel matter.”

This was not Self’s first run-in with the law. In 2010, he pled guilty to a misdemeanor DUI offense and received a suspended 10-day jail sentence.

Self earned a law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2004. He began working for Alabama’s sports compliance office in 2008.

Self was appointed to the position of football administrator in May 2021. Self reports to Byrne, who is the athletic director at Alabama.
