Is the shitshow of January 6 at the U.S. Capitol a sneak preview of what’s to come? That seems to be the warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which has issued a warning about armed protests in all 50 states (don’t worry, I won’t ask you to name all 50). According to a report from ABC News:
Starting this week and running through at least Inauguration Day, armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols and at the U.S. Capitol, according to an internal FBI bulletin obtained by ABC News.
Naturally, some officials and citizens are concerned following the complete shitshow that occurred on January 6 when what appeared to be a group of Trump supporters occupied the U.S. Capitol during the certification of “Creepy” Joe Biden’s Electoral College votes. With five people dead and many unanswered questions about just what happened and who is to blame, it makes sense to be cautious.
The tragic deaths on January 6th have led to murmuring that things could have been much worse. An Associated Press report noted:
The FBI is investigating whether some of the attackers intended to kidnap members of Congress and hold them hostage. Authorities are particularly focused on why some in the mob were seen carrying plastic zip-tie handcuffs and had apparently accessed areas of the Capitol generally difficult for the public to locate.
However, some have argued that the government is using this as a pretext to implement draconian laws including strong anti-gun regulations and other curtailments on civil liberties, much as the United States did when it hastily passed the Patriot Act following the events of September 11. In this case, some critics have argued that there were agent provocateurs present who incited the mob to riot. There is also talk of a coup, but not by Trump supporters but those looking to oust him early from the White House. Consider this thought from an article at Revolver.com:
Real coups are not clumsy mob attacks adjacent to lawmakers. Real coups, above all, are about control: Control of communications, control of bureaucracy, and above all, control of military power. And in the past few days, it is President Trump’s enemies who have seized control of all these things.
This won’t be the first time the United States has dealt with hysteria whether it’s the wave of Red Scares in the 20th century, the anarchist movement, or the coronapocalypse, and it’s definitely nothing compared to world history. History has repeatedly shown that power-hungry people and/or crackpots have exploited unrest to consolidate power. Use your ability to think critically and don’t believe everything you read or see online. Humanity has got through worse things in the past whether it’s the bubonic plague, Viking raids, or Taylor Swift. We’ll get through whatever lies ahead.
